I was out with the crowd in 1993 after the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup. I was there when the first beer bottle hit the wall and windows started being broken and watched with horror as the party turned into a first class riot. A number of us made the decision to find a way out of the pack when the fighting began. It wasn’t our thing. A few die-hard brawlers had been hoping for something like this. They were at the forefront. The majority simply hung around far too long. They wanted to see what would happen. Mostly they were curious about themselves. They could feel something welling up within them. There is this blind and angry part of our character which comes out when crowds and alcohol mix – whether our tribe has won or our tribe has lost. It’s no mystery where this part of our character leads. Watch the news. See what happens when people are pulled into things instead of making a choice. It’s made worse when you cover your face or suppose that you’re with people who do not know your name.
